The Review:

Road trip! The Milwaukee Wings crew hit the road and headed north to visit Legend Larry's! I've frequented the main downtown Sheboygan location before, but for this trip, we opted to check out the Sheboygan Falls location (2 other locations in Green Bay and Manitowoc). Sheboygan is certainly not Milwaukee, but if you're a wing lover, you need to make this trip at least once. Legend Larry's have won several awards at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in Buffalo, NY (also worth a trip once, I did it in 2010) so these are definitely wings you need to try. If you're not up for the 1-hour drive, you can get Legend Larry's sauces and a couple places in the Milwaukee Area (Paulie's Pub and Bougey's Bar), but I can certainly say a trip to Kohler-Andrae State Park, Legend Larry's and 3 Sheeps Brewing really does make for a fantastic day trip!

Normally our wing adventures are an after work treat during the week, but wing night was actually wing lunch as we headed up for our afternoon adventure in Sheboygan. Legend Larry's does not offer a wing night per se, but I have seen their social media posts over the years mention some specials, usually tied to a Packers or Brewers game, so keep an eye out for those. Otherwise, a dozen wings will run you $13.99 or $7.50 for 6 wings, also worth noting is you cannot flavor split, so if you want 12 wings and 2 flavors, you'll order 2 orders of 6 wings. *As always, prices/availability of menu items/prices and/or specials are subject to change at the sole discretion of the bar without the knowledge of Milwaukeewings.com and may not be updated accordingly.*

Legend Larry's may not boast the longest flavor list out there, but there certainly should be something for everyone! Their sauce lineup, from mild to hot: Garlic Parmesan, Teriyaki, Honey BBQ, Sweet Thai Chili, Mild, Spicy Bacon BBQ, Medium, Hot Garlic, Raspberry Habanero, Scarry Larry, and DOA.

Despite only 4 members of the wing crew present, we ordered a ton of wings... hey, if you're travelling an hour for wings, you have to load up. That said, we were able were able to try a ton of wings. All the wings were served up piping hot and super juicy and flavorful. Most had a nice crispy exterior, although a few of mine could have been a bit crispier, but I'm nitpicking a bit on that. The wings weren't huge, but they were nicely sized, about 10-12 were enough to fill me up. We were off to a great start with the chicken itself, let's talk about those sauces!

Garlic Parmesan: This is a top tier Garlic Parm sauce! I'm always so focused on ordering Buffalo sauces from Legend Larry's, not sure I've ever actually tried this. Both the garlic and the nutty and tangy funkiness of the parmesan cheese come through in this creamy sauce, a must have for any garlic parm fans!

Teriyaki: This teriyaki flavor was sticky, sweet, and salty, a classic flavor combo. However, this teriyaki was just a bit too sweet for my taste, I like mine a bit more on the savory/salty side. Good option for someone looking for a mild and sweet wing, just not my personal favorite.

Honey BBQ: Another sauce I'm not sure I've had from Legend Larry's before, this mustard-based BBQ sauce was packed with a more tangy than sweet taste from the honey with just a touch of heat from the mustard. I love a good mustard-based BBQ sauce and this was a winner. While fantastic on the wings, I really want to try this one on a pulled pork sandwich...

Sweet Thai Chili: A little bit sweet, a little bit tangy, with just a touch of heat from Thai chilis this is a really good Asian inspired sauce.

Spicy Bacon BBQ: Another one of Legend Larry's award winning sauces, this decently spicy BBQ sauce had a great balance of sweet, heat, smokiness and rich and savory bacon flavor. A fun departure from a normal BBQ sauce.

Medium: My personal favorite! I ordered hot, but actually wish I'd ordered this one as I think this is the absolutely perfect and quintessential Buffalo sauce. Hot cayenne pepper and vinegar tanginess all beautifully balanced by buttery richness. I'm not alone on this opinion as this sauce has won first place at the National Buffalo Wing Festival in 2005, 2007, 2011, 2013, and 2018, and finished in the top 3 many other times. If you love Buffalo sauce, you NEED to try this one!

Hot Garlic: I always order this flavor thinking it's going to be a garlic Buffalo sauce and I'm always caught off guard when it's not. This is sauce is inspired by Asian flavors, I think I'd more accurately describe it as a sweet and spicy garlic teriyaki. Much like their regular teriyaki, it's a bit too sweet for my personal taste, but certainly nails the flavor its going for: a ton of garlic in a sweet and spicy sauce.

Raspberry Habanero: This one was really fun! One first bite you're punched in the face with the bright and tart flavor of raspberries followed by a wave of peppery heat from the habaneros. It's not heat, but definitely not too hot, this is a great mashup of heat a flavor that is worth a taste if you're looking for something a bit different.

Hot: While I've had their hotter Scarry Larry sauce in the past (and maybe DOA once), Hot is about the top of the heat charts I'll go unless I'm in a heat seeking mood. While not insanely hot up front, this one builds in intensity and lingers for a bit. Very intense pepper flavor on this one. While certainly tasty with a nice heat level, I actually enjoy the balance of flavor of the medium sauce more than the hot.

The MKE Wings Crew's Favorites:

Frank: Medium and Raspberry Habanero

Amber: Thai Chili

Jeremy: Garlic Parmesan

Molly: Thai Chili

Conclusion:

As I mentioned in the intro, if you're a wing lover, you need to make a trip up the Legend Larry's, these are truly great wings. While yes, you can get them in the Milwaukee area too, I'd recommend going to Sheboygan at least once for the original experience. The awards they win are certainly earned, and they can put one more award in their trophy case as they are a Milwaukee Wings Hall of Fame Wing Joint! (Just don't as for an actual trophy though as I don't actually have trophies!)
