Wing Special (as of review date): Wednesday $1 Wings

The Review:

For this wing review we travel a bit northwest to Menomonee Falls to the Alumni Club Tavern & Eatery. Many reviews are the result of recommendations, but we're here today simply because I've driven by this place a bunch but never been. I'm not sure I've found a place in The Falls for great wings, so here's hoping the Alumni Club can deliver!

The crew stopped in on a Wednesday to take part in the $1 wing night special which will save you a few bucks versus the normal menu price. It's mid 2023 and wing prices at bars and restaurants have remained high, so this special isn't too bad with current prices. *As always, prices/availability of menu items/prices and/or specials are subject to change at the sole discretion of the bar without the knowledge of Milwaukeewings.com and may not be updated accordingly.*

The sauce/flavor list isn't too long, but just about every wing eater should be able to find something they like: Alumni Sauce (labeled as Buffalo with a twist), BBQ, Bourbon, Garlic Parmesan, Sweet Chili, and Mango Habanero. With our crew of four, we were able to try just about every sauce.

The crew ordered 42 wings, which seemingly may have overwhelmed the kitchen a bit. Out wings came out all at once, but some were a bit on the cool side, like they'd come out the frier and had to wait for an entirely different batch to fry, so that was a bit disappointing. Other than that, wing size was overall pretty large, I was pleasantly full after 12 wings. Most of the wings were cooked nicely with a nice crispy exterior, but the smaller wings were a bit dried out. All the wing sauces were liberally applied, each with was just doused with sauce, messy, but certainly tasty.

BBQ: A favorite for some of us tonight, and despite not usually enjoying BBQ sauced wings, these were pretty good. A smokey, tangy BBQ sauce with some heavy molasses notes without being overly sweet.

Garlic Parmesan: The color on this sauce was shockingly yellow. Garlicy with the noticeable taste and texture of grated parmesan cheese. But there was a weird lingering taste of butter, but like fake butter? It's hard to describe, but it gave this sauce a bit of an off putting flavor that took away from what otherwise would have been a tasty flavor.

Bourbon: I didn't try this sauce on a wing, but was able to taste the sauce. Super sweet, almost brown sugary. Too sweet for my tastes, I'd stay away from this one in the future.

Mango Habanero: Good balance of sweet and heat, definitely can taste the flavor of the habanero pepper, but without the blinding heat you can sometimes get.

Alumni Sauce: The menu defined this flavor as "buffalo with a twist," which worried me a bit as you don't mess with a classic, especially if you're not offering a normal buffalo sauce on the menu. Initially, I didn't like this sauce. You could definitely taste the buffalo part of the sauce, the cayenne pepper and vinegary kick you would expect. But, the twist seemed to bit a bit of sweetness, almost a bit ketchupy. However, as I ate a few more this oddly became my favorite sauce of the night and packed a good amount of heat the more you ate.

Sweet Chili: Solid sauce, sweet and sour with a small of kick from red chilis, but like most sweet chili wing sauces I see, they're all pretty much the same. Doesn't make it bad by any means, it's just not a stand out.

The MKE Wings Crew's Favorites:

Frank: Alumni Sauce

Jeremy: BBQ

Josh: Garlic Parm

Jen: Bourbon

Conclusion:

All members of the wing crew had the same conclusion, "Okay, not bad." While we liked the place, nothing about the wings was going to bring us back for their wings. The search for a great wing place in The Falls continues.
