The Original Guide to Buffalo Wings in the Brew City

Flannery’s (64)

The Vitals:

Name: Flannery’s
425 East Wells Street – Milwaukee, WI 53202
Review Date: July 19, 2010
Wing type: Traditional, bone-in
Wing Special: $0.25 wings Mondays

The Review:

  • Chicken Quality: Very big wings, even the smallest wings here were on par with an average wing at most places.  The chicken quality itself left a little bit to be desired however.  The chicken had the texture of being frozen for quite a while.  The wings were a bit tougher and drier than I would like, nothing terrible, but it is definitely something that can be improved upon.
  • Sauce Variety: Three flavors to choose from: BBQ, Buffalo, and Teriyaki
  • Sauce Quality:
    • Buffalo – fairly bland for a Buffalo style sauce, not much spice here at all.  If you like your Buffalo wings on the mild side, this is a good bet, but if you’re looking for any decent amount of heat, you will be disappointed.
    • Teriyaki – This was probably my favorite flavor at Flannery’s.  Slightly sweet and sticky, with a fair amount of spicy heat in this sauce.  Nothing overpowering or overly spicy by any means, but a nice change of pace from the normal teriyaki you’ll find elsewhere.  Normally I prefer a more salty, savory teriyaki rather than the sweet variation, but this one wasn’t too sweet that I didn’t really like it.
    • BBQ – a little on the ketchupy end of the BBQ spectrum.  No real discernible heat or smoky flavor that I’m looking for in a BBQ
  • Sides Quality: Your choice of ranch or bleu cheese served with your wings in very ample portions (for easy wing dipping).  No celery or any other veggies.  The bleu cheese had a bit of a sour cream like taste to it, and not much bleu cheese flavor.  The dressing did have some nice sized chunks of bleu cheese, but they weren’t very creamy, they were kind of brittle and lacked that distinct bleu cheese taste.
  • Value: Normal menu price is very good ($7 for 12, $12 for 24 or $18 for 36) and they do have their $0.25 wing special on Mondays.

The Final Score:

Chicken Quality: 7/10
Sauce Quality: 6/10
Sauce Variety: 2/5
Sides Quality: 3/5
Value: 3/3

Overall: 21/33 = 64

This isn’t a place I’d suggest as a destination for wings, but they’re decent enough and would make a good option if you happen to find yourself at Flannery’s.
