The Review:

  • Chicken Quality: HUGE WINGS!  Really, these have to be some of the biggest wings I’ve come across.  Cooked very well, crispy outside and moist, juicy inside.   On our return visit after a two year absence, the wings were not nearly as large as they must have been the first time around as the wings are merely average sized, not the giant wings I raved about in the initial review.  Good quality chicken, but a bit overcooked as the chicken wasn’t all that tender, but overall a decent wing.
  • Sauce Variety:  Three options: Mild, Medium, Hot.  You can also get your wings plain, with a dipping sauce on the side, like BBQ.   2012 update: While the menu only lists two sauce choices: mild and buffalo, the waitress offered up: Mild, Medium, Hot, Caribbean Jerk, and Honey Mustard BBQ.
  • Sauce Quality:
    • Unsurprisingly Mild, Medium, and Hot were all very similar except the heat level.  It’s hard to describe this sauce, it wasn’t your traditional Buffalo wing style sauce, it was slightly like a BBQ sauce, a bit of a sweet ketchup like taste was present in the sauce, but it wasn’t as sweet or smoky like a BBQ sauce.  At first I didn’t care for this sauce, but the more I ate, I really started to like the sauce which was surprising given the fact that it wasn’t the traditional Buffalo flavor that I adore.  To me, the mild didn’t have too much zip, but some of the people I was with who are more sensitive to the the heat found the mild to have a bite to it.  For me the hot was near a perfect balance of taste and heat without being too mild or overpoweringly hot.  While they may not have much variety, the sauces they do have are very unique and very tasty.  Our 2012 visit is pretty much the same, with the medium sauce tasting a bit like a BBQ sauce than a buffalo sauce, but had it’s own unique flavor.  One thing I would add regarding the Hot is that it has a very strong pepper flavor, after the first few bites you get a sense that the heat is just going to keep building, but it really doesn’t.  Still too hot for mild wing lovers, but won’t phase a true chili-head.
    • Caribbean Jerk (2012 update) – I’ve often said on this site that jerk flavored wings a love/hate relationship for me.  Too often jerk flavors are overly sweet or really spice heavy (not spicy as in heat, but a lot of other jerk spices like allspice or thyme) and the flavor isn’t very good.  I was very happy do find that I loved jerk flavor here at Colonel Hart’s.  It had the perfect balance of sweet properly balanced with tasty Caribbean spices.  I’d go out on a limb and say this was the best jerk flavor wing I’ve ever had.
  • Sides Quality: Wings served with Ranch, Bleu Cheese and Celery.  The ranch was very tasty, cool, and creamy.  Sadly, I did not like the Bleu Cheese, it tasted just like the ranch with a few mild bleu cheese crumbles tossed in.  IT really didn’t taste all that much like Bleu Cheese.
  • Value: The normal menu price is more than fair and a $0.30  $0.40 wing special is always a great deal!

Sauce Variety: 2 3/5
Sides Quality: 3/5

A great ‘Tosa bar with some very unique wings worth checking out.  I wish they had a bit more to offer in the variety department, but what the do offer is definitely worth checking out!
